Artist Statement
Creating is an essential element of my life experience. It is my spritual practise, as essential as eating, sleeping and loving…..
My work is an expression of my present experience within the world and my aim is to create imagery that communicates this. Sometimes it’s a story, sometimes a feeling, and sometimes it’s just a raw exposure of my essence. As I allow myself to be exposed as such, I wish to inspire the viewer to look deeper within their own experience of the world and explore their own connection to Spirit.
I am inspired by my surroundings; drawing on elements to use as celebrations or metaphors for my current experience.
For example, whilst living on the land, I expressed myself through images of trees. “Tree” became a standard, an iconic form which I moulded and recreated in a form that expressed my reality at that point in time. Like a visual diary, the trees and I shared experiences over 18 months, describing the birth of a relationship, followed by the exploration of roles, identity, struggle, departure and rebirth. Deeply personal, each painting signified a time of introspection and my commitment to honesty of expression.
The combination of the experience of working as a masseuse and attending life drawing sessions, has stimulated my current interest in painting nudes. I am deeply inspired by the beauty and depth of a naked Being; a reflection of us all and our human-ness, stripped down to the simple reality of our present condition on this planet. As the model becomes exposed, I too allow my layers to shed, creating art from a place of simplicity and vulnerability.
I am deeply grateful to Ron Curran who, through his Dynamic Drawing classes has inspired me to use this form as a way of exploring and developing my own language of expression.
My paintings of nudes are often experiments in the use of materials, for example collage, texture, layering. Following a playful curiosity and a desire to open up dynamic possibilities, I use textural materials to go beyond the surface and give the work a multidimensional life. These elements of creative chaos, I feel, bring more spontaneous presence into the physical realm, triggering an interactive experience for myself and the viewer.
The more I create, the greater my sense of wholeness. I dream of making art. My bliss is to be in my studio absorbed in a project, alive with the experience. There are so many more adventures to be had…..
